How one company
is keeping the art of
traditional book binding
alive with its iPad cases
BY florence ion
traditional books may seem like they’re going out of style, but San Francisco-based DODOcase is helping to keep the format
alive with its stylish iPad cases. Despite the fact
that more and more readers are shifting to
digital content, DODOcase founders Craig Dalton,
Patrick Buckley, and Mark Manning jumped at
the opportunity to create a product that could
honor the timeless paper-and-ink aesthetic. The
trio debuted their first DODOcases in conjunction
with the release of the original iPad, and their
products have since skyrocketed in popularity—
even President Obama has been photographed
using one in the Oval Office. DODOcase now
makes cases for various iterations of the Kindle
and has introduced a plethora of collectible
designs for iPad users, but what’s really cool
about this company is that it makes each case
individually at a warehouse in San Francisco’s
Potrero Hill neighborhood. Here’s a
look at how each DODOcase is put
together. (If you’d like one,
you can nab it at www.
