I’m Outta Here
aside from the obvious freedom of not having
to shower or comb my hair, and being able to
attend to my daily editorial to-do list without
anyone looking over my shoulder, there’s another reason
I look forward to working in my living room instead of
physically traveling the 20 miles between my house and
Mac|Life HQ. For starters, wireless connectivity makes
moving my workstation wherever I’m most comfortable
a total cinch. Where I used to be stuck in our freezing-
cold back office using a desktop computer—essentially
chained to my desk—I can now carry my MacBook Pro
and wireless Mighty Mouse from one room to the next
and be up and running in as long as it takes to fire up
the ’Book. And living in a Wi-Fi metropolis like the San
Francisco Bay Area means fast, easy coverage in almost
any public venue I might have occasion to pass through
during the day.
While I don’t travel as much for work—or fun—as I
used to, the idea of having to hit the road and get stuff
done while in transit is less daunting than ever, especially
with my two best travel buddies by my side: my ‘Book and
my iPhone. Which is why I wanted to kiss the ground—
and Steve Jobs—when I heard on March 17 that the
iPhone 3.0 software will finally get cut, copy, and paste
functionality. This simple yet crucial addition will make
editing and creating documents on the iPhone—and not
just tapping out quick to-do lists or reminders—possible.
Cut/copy/paste will also finally prove that the iPhone is
the pocket-size Mac we always knew it could be.
In other words,
there will be more
reasons than ever
not to be tied down
to the office, which
can be mixed bag,
as any ultramobile pro knows: You don’t have to be in a
particular spot to get work done, but you also seem never
to be doing anything but work.
the idea of having to
hit the road and still
get stuff done is less
daunting than ever.
Still, even if increased mobile productivity only means
that more worker bees like me can smell fresh air or
sip their lattes as they finalize the quarterly report, the
ability to roam where we want to—and take our Mac gear
along for the ride—is enough to get us looking forward
to the journey ahead. See “Hit the Road, Mac” on page
18 for the full details on how you can improve your own
journeys in the here and now.
